Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ)

Introduction

The Empathy Test is a self-report psychological assessment based on the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ), a widely used measure of emotional empathy and interpersonal emotional responsiveness. The assessment evaluates how strongly individuals emotionally connect with, understand, and respond to the feelings and experiences of others. Empathy refers to the ability to emotionally resonate with another person’s emotional state, recognize emotional signals, experience compassion, and respond sensitively to social and emotional situations. Individuals with stronger empathy-related tendencies often display emotional awareness, compassion, emotional responsiveness, and concern for others, while lower empathy-related tendencies may involve emotional detachment, reduced emotional sensitivity, or limited emotional engagement. This assessment measures several dimensions including emotional responsiveness, compassionate concern, emotional awareness, social sensitivity, and emotional disengagement. The assessment may help individuals better understand their emotional interactions, interpersonal sensitivity, and emotional connection patterns.

Procedure

Read each statement carefully and select the response that best describes your usual thoughts, feelings, or behaviors in emotional and social situations. Answer honestly based on your typical experiences rather than isolated situations.

Participation

This assessment is designed for adolescents and adults who wish to better understand their emotional empathy, interpersonal sensitivity, emotional responsiveness, and social-emotional awareness. It may be particularly relevant for individuals interested in personality traits, emotional intelligence, relationships, social functioning, communication patterns, or emotional connection with others. The assessment may also be useful in educational, research, coaching, counseling, workplace, or self-reflection contexts where understanding emotional awareness, compassion, and interpersonal emotional functioning may provide personal insight.
