Background

Narcissism test is an interactive version of Deenz Narcissistic Personality Scale (DNPS), a self-screening tool designed for measuring subclinical traits associated with narcissistic personality. It is based on the preliminary version of research on Development and Validation of Deenz Narcissistic Personality Scale.

Narcissism describes a person who may exhibit a set of personality tendencies associated with excessive self-love, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. From a subclinical perspective, narcissism may be considered a normal and healthy aspect of personality when traits are exhibited at a moderate level and do not cause significant impairment in interpersonal relationships.

Over time, understanding of narcissism has evolved. Researchers emphasize understanding narcissism on a spectrum model. By assessing traits on dimensional levels it becomes easier to determine whether an individual may show inclinations toward narcissistic personality traits. The development of the Deenz Narcissistic Personality Scale started with a focus on assessing eight distinct but correlated subclinical traits: Grandiosity, Fantasy, Specialness, Entitlement, Exploitation, Lack of Empathy, Envy, and Arrogance.

Grandiosity refers to an exaggerated sense of abilities, talent, importance, and power.

Fantasy refers to a tendency toward grandiose fantasies involving success, power, attractiveness, recognition, or idealized relationships.

Specialness refers to a belief that one is unique, exceptional, or different from others in meaningful ways.

Entitlement refers to the expectation of receiving special treatment, privileges, admiration, or recognition without necessarily earning them.

Exploitation refers to taking advantage of others for personal gain without adequately considering the impact on other people.

Lack of Empathy refers to difficulty understanding, appreciating, or caring about the emotions, needs, and experiences of others.

Envy refers to resentment, jealousy, or discomfort when others achieve success, recognition, power, attractiveness, or social status.

Arrogance refers to an attitude of superiority, dismissiveness, and looking down upon others while overestimating one's own value or importance.

Procedure

The assessment consists of 32 statements and typically takes 4–6 minutes to complete. You should respond to the statements by describing your personality characteristics, beliefs, emotional reactions, attitudes, and interpersonal tendencies associated with narcissistic traits.

Participation

Narcissism test is intended for adults and older adolescents interested in understanding personality characteristics associated with narcissistic traits. Participation in this online self-assessment is completely anonymous. No personally identifying information is collected or stored.

Scoring

The scoring of this self-test is very simple, there are 32 items scored on a five-point response scale. Item responses are calculated to produce a raw total score ranging from 0 to 128, with higher scores indicating greater levels of narcissistic personality-related traits.

Results include an Overall Index Score and scores for eight dimensions: Grandiosity, Fantasy, Specialness, Entitlement, Exploitation, Lack of Empathy, Envy, and Arrogance.

Dimension scores are standardized to a 0–100 scale and interpreted using qualitative categories.

Overall results are classified into five interpretive ranges:

• Minimal (0–20)
• Mild (21–40)
• Moderate (41–60)
• High (61–80)
• Very High (81–100)
