Empathy Test – Empathy Quotient (EQ-40)

Based On:

Baron-Cohen, S., & Wheelwright, S. (2004). The Empathy Quotient

Introduction

Simon Baron-Cohen, Sally Wheelwright, and colleagues developed the Empathy Quotient (EQ-40) for the investigation of empathy, social understanding, and emotional responsiveness in adults, particularly among individuals with Asperger Syndrome, High-Functioning Autism, and typical populations. This interactive version of the scale is designed to provide dimensional interpretations of scores across three primary domains: Emotional Empathy, Cognitive Empathy, and Social Skills. These dimensions are derived from empathy-related response patterns and are informed by previous EQ research (Dinsdale & Crespi, 2013; Michaels et al., 2014; Wheelwright et al., 2006)

Procedure

The test contains 40 statements about thoughts, feelings, and everyday social interactions. Participants respond using a 4-point scale ranging from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree.” There are no right or wrong answers, and individuals are encouraged to answer honestly based on their usual behavior and experiences. The test typically takes about 5–10 minutes to complete. Higher scores on the EQ-40 generally indicate stronger empathy, emotional responsiveness, and social understanding. Lower scores may reflect difficulties with perspective-taking, emotional awareness, or social interaction. This interactive version also provides dimensional interpretations across Emotional Empathy, Cognitive Empathy, and Social Skills to help users better understand different aspects of their empathy profile. Results are intended for educational and self-exploratory purposes and should not be considered a clinical diagnosis.

Participation

The Empathy Quotient (EQ-40) is designed for adults and older adolescents to assess empathy, emotional understanding, and social functioning. It is widely used in psychological research, personality assessment, and studies involving Autism Spectrum conditions and interpersonal behavior.
